DATA STUE Thematic School

14/10/2024 @ 8 h 00 min - 18/10/2024 @ 17 h 00 min

DATA STUE is a thematic school organized by INSU around data management in Earth System and Environmental Sciences. The school’s primary scientific objective is to help overcome the obstacles to data logistics and operations, in order to meet new and emerging scientific challenges. It is necessary to reinforce and accelerate the digital transformation of research practices (in the broadest sense) in STUE to promote data interoperability. Data interoperability will make it possible, for example, to: Compare heterogeneous data (e.g. INSU / INEE) to put climate change and impacts on living organisms into perspective, Enable joint inversions to create more exhaustive models, true digital replicas of objects, processes or systems (digital twins), or Promote the use of data processing chains exploiting HPDA/GPU-type technologies (INS2I), in particular for the exploration and analysis of large volumes of data (BigData). Trainees will learn about the various stages in the data lifecycle, from acquisition/production through to valorization:
  • collecting data and putting it into standard, open and free formats, as recommended by data hubs,
  • describe data with standardized, interoperable metadata using general or thematic thesaurus (controlled vocabularies),
  • deposit data in ad-hoc, certified and/or TRUST-compliant thematic warehouses, to enable access and reuse,
  • reference data with durable identifiers (e.g. DOI),
  • raise awareness of the environmental impact of data,
  • promote the work accomplished through data papers, and
  • use Applications in real-life conditions through Computational Notebooks or Virtual Research Environments (VRE).
The data lifecycle will be documented at every stage, and the link made with the reference documents to be drawn up for both projects and warehouses, such as functional descriptions of the underlying workflows, retention plans and data management plans (DMPs). The second scientific objective is to clarify the national landscape, in particular the services provided by Data Terra IR, and to guide participants through the multitude of offers, from organizations, universities or thematic services, already in use by the Earth and Environmental Sciences scientific community.
