GIRAFE
reGIonal ReAl time Fire plumEsPresentation
GIRAFE is a software which provides forecasts of plumes trajectories. Trajectories are calculated using lagrangian dispertion model FLEXPART and ECMWF meteorological fields.
GIRAFE uses fire detections of MODIS satellite in order to predict plumes trajectories, or MACC satellite data.
At the moment two versions of GIRAFE exists :
- GIRAFE-MODIS : MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer), provides forecasts of biomass burning plumes using MODIS/TERRA and MODIS/AQUA daily fire detections. TERRA and AQUA data are from Terra and Aqua satellites, with overlapping dates for select time periods. MODIS calculates the NDSI, a measure of the difference between the infrared reflectance of snow in visible and shortwave wavelengths.
- GIRAFE-MACC-TNO : MACC (Monitoring Atmospheric Composition and Climate) provides forecasts of anthopogenic pollution plumes based on TNO-MACC high resolution European emission inventory of year 2007. MACC uses satellite and sophisticated computer models. TNO contribution is an emissions dataset from 2003 to 2007.
