MAP-IO
Marion Dufresne Atmospheric Program – Indian OceanThe objective of MAP-IO is to study the composition of the atmosphere and the ocean-atmosphere processes that have an impact on regional climate and numerical weather prediction.
This scientific programme is based on the banking of oceanic and atmospheric data by equipping the ship Marion Dufresne with 19 permanent and autonomous atmospheric measurement systems.
The MAP-IO project aims to make long-term atmospheric and marine biology observations in the western Indian Ocean region. These data will be stored in open-source format in the international networks (ICOS, ACTRIS) used to initialise and validate the IPCC climate models and satellites, and in the GeOSUR database dedicated to research and to all the stakeholders in the region.
These observation systems have five main purposes:
- To document the ocean surface state and the biological composition of phytoplankton; data allowing to participate in the calibration of satellite data and the validation of oceanic and biological models over the Indian and Southern Ocean.
- Monitoring global atmospheric changes, particularly in the Indian Ocean region, which is very poorly documented (NDACC, ACTRIS, ICOS networks). To bank data in open data.
- Study air mass transport and the redistribution of aerosols and chemical compounds in the troposphere and stratosphere (IGAC and SPARC programmes).
- Documenting marine gas and aerosol emissions for atmospheric numerical forecasting or climate models (SOLAS programme).
- Strengthen the regional climate change observation networks deployed under the ReNovRisk Cyclones and Climate Change (INTERREG-V), IOGA4MET (TAAF, AAP Iles Eparses) and UV-indien (INTERREG-V) programmes.
The AERIS/SEDOO data and services centre is involved in the following ways:
- Provision of a catalogue to distribute the project data.
- Management of data flows in connection with ICOS
