SOFOG 3D

SOuth westFOGs 3D experiment for processes study
Project websiteData access

The project aims to better understand small-scale processes to improve fog forecasts.
It is supported by the ANR (SoFog3D project) and is part of the Contract of Objectives and Performance 2017-2021: “Given the challenges that fog situations represent for air traffic, Météo-France will conduct a specific R&D action on the observation and forecasting of fog, by mobilizing innovative experimental means including a radar dedicated to the observation of clouds as well as specific modelling means”

he objectives of the project are to evaluate the capacity of the high-resolution version (500 m) of Arome to forecast fog, to improve the understanding of the phenomenon at fine scales thanks to a three-dimensional exploration of the fog by remote sensing instruments, a network of in-situ stations and a fleet of drones, and to test the contribution to the forecasting of the assimilation of innovative instrumentation including, in particular, the Basta radar and a network of radiometers.
