S5P-PCA: A proof of concept for detecting extreme atmospheric events on WEkEO
AERIS/ICARE, in collaboration with the companies SPASCIA and HYGEOS is participating in a project led by EumetSAT (Cloud Optimised Use Cases) of a proof of concept for porting a processing algorithm to the Copernicus WEkEO infrastructure. This processing chain, namely S5P-PCA, is the result of a development led by SPASCIA and HYGEOS, and operationalized by AERIS/ICARE. Its objective is the detection and identification of extreme atmospheric events (e.g. CO emissions associated with fires or pollution) using a principal component analysis method on Sentinel5-P data. This code is ready to be operated on the AERIS/ICARE infrastructure, which allows for reference metrics in terms of processing time and data access. This exercise aims first to identify the problems that may be encountered during a port to a cloud such as WEkEO, to determine the advantages and disadvantages and to evaluate the performance differences between the two approaches. One of the final objectives is also to see if this type of platform can be used for operational processing.
