Discover the Meso-NH database for C²OMODO

This database, developed by the LAERO laboratory, is part of the C²OMODO space mission. C²OMODO (Convective Core Observations through MicrOwave Derivatives in the trOpics) is a CNES space project, a tandem of radiometers that will be launched in March 2030, as part of the AOS-storm (Atmosphere Observing System) mission of NASA, CNES and JAXA. Its aim is to find the mass flux and vertical velocity in convective cores. In order to develop inversion algorithms, it is necessary to have a database linking C2OMODOR observations and atmospheric profiles. Simulations of deep convection situations are thus carried out using the Meso-NH community code and the RTTOV satellite observation emulator.

The Meso-NH database brings together simulation output at a horizontal resolution of 200 m, including atmospheric profiles (air speed, temperature, pressure, water content in vapour, liquid and solid form) and synthetic C2OMODOR (11 microwave channels at t and t+1 min) and radar (JAXA) observations. It can be used to:

  • develop inversion algorithms for C²OMODO
  • explore the relationship between vertical dynamics and ice content
  • study the life cycle of deep convection
