ECCAD

Emissions of atmospheric Compounds and Compilation of Ancillary Data
Project websiteData access

The main goal of ECCAD (Emissions of atmospheric Compounds and Compilation of Ancillary Data) is to provide scientific and policy users with datasets of surface emissions of atmospheric compounds, and ancillary data needed to estimate or quantify the surface emissions. ECCAD provides the emissions of major atmospheric compounds like carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, methane, nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, black and organic carbon, PM 2.5 and PM 10; and a large set of different volatile organic compounds as well as several other compounds. Since 2011 ECCAD is the GEIA (Global Emission InitiAtive) database, gathering a community of more than 2700 users from 900 institutions worldwide.

Observations

The emissions inventories in ECCAD covers a very wide range of surface emissions, at the global and regional scale, at various spatial resolution and at daily, monthly, yearly or decadal time resolution. Depending on the dataset, the period covers ranges from 1750 to 2100. The emissions corresponds to historical, current and future scenarios. The surface emissions of more than 80 species are provided for different categories: anthropogenic, biomass burning, and natural emissions. The anthropogenic emissions are available for different sectors, such as industry, energy generation, road and non-road transportation, waste, agriculture, agriculture waste, solvents, etc. Two different sectors are available for the biomass burning emissions: emissions from forest and from savanna fires. Natural emissions include the emissions of biogenic volatile organic compounds from the vegetation, emissions of sulfur dioxide from volcanoes, emissions of different compounds from the oceans, etc. Ancillary data include land cover data, data on fires (burned areas and active fires) and geographical information such as population. More datasets are included regularly in the database. The data is available in NetCDF-CF files.

Database

The user friendly user web interface provides many services:

  • An access to a data catalogue and detailed metadata with duly reference to the data original site and provider
  • A visualization tool displaying 2D maps, with graphical tools
  • A rationalization of the use of input data in algorithms or emission models
  • Analysis and comparison of emissions datasets and ancillary data
  • Several tools for the evaluation of emissions and ancillary data

ECCAD is a dynamical and interactive database, providing the most up to date datasets including data under development in different projects. Users are welcome to add their own datasets, or have their regional masks included in order to use ECCAD tools, and gain visibilty througout the emission community.
