New GEORING product on cloud cover

With the spatial and spectral capabilities of the recent geostationary sensors, the potential of combining geostationary observations from several operational satellites to create the so-called GEORING is attracting increasing interest from the cloud and aerosol remote sensing community.

A brand new product has been released by the AERIS/ICARE Data and Services Center. By combining the cloud masks issued of 5 geostationary imagers around the equator thanks to the SAFNWC Cloud Mask algorithm , it gives an almost instantaneous global view of the cloud cover. The data products are in NetCDF4 format and respect the Climate Convention, making them easily compliant with the most commonly used tools by the community. Future GEORING products of this kind are under development at AERIS/ICARE.

A poster describing the AERIS/ICARE activities related to this kind of products will be presented at the Third Workshop of the International Cloud Working Group, that will be held in Darmstadt, Germany, 26-28 February 2024.

Data credits:

  • The level 1 geostationary data used as SAFNWC input come from NOAA, JMA and EUMETSAT sources.
  • The SAFNWC geostationary data issued of these level 1 are processed and distributed by the AERIS/SATMOS service (Météo-France/ Centre de Météorologie Spatiale).
