AERIS in action for the MAESTRO campaign

The MAESTRO (Mesoscale organization of tropical convection) campaign is a measurement campaign to study the mechanisms of mesoscale organization of convection and the impact of this organization on climate, as well as to assess the quality of new observations from the EarthCARE satellite. This campaign will be one of the components of the international ORCESTRA initiative. It is funded by an ERC and involves numerous CNRS laboratories (LMD, LATMOS, LSCE,LAERO, CNRM, LAMP, LEGOS, GSMA) as well as teams from SAFIRE, IGN, ICTP, MPI and the University of Hamburg.

This campaign is currently running (from August 10 to September 10) off the coast of Cape Verde, and has required the support of the AERIS/ESPRI teams.

The campaign support site developed for the MAESTRO campaign by AERIS/ESPRI includes :

  • A range of tools to help plan aircraft flights: weather forecasts based on different models (AROME, ECMWF, etcc), with multiple variables, cross-sections in the models (a tool used in the RALI-THINICE campaign), visualization of satellite trajectory forecasts (especially EarthCARE) and the possibility of drawing the flight path to share with pilots.

  • Live flight monitoring, with live visualization of satellite images and products, and display of various real-time products (notably TOOCAN for convective system monitoring). Thanks to these observations, it is possible to adjust flight trajectories in real time by transmitting this information to the aircraft via the Planet tool, used by SAFIRE.

  • Finally, the campaign support site allows post-flight retrieval of data, quicklooks and flight reports, as well as quicklook visualization tools for the various instruments.

The various functions developed for the MAESTRO campaign can be shared with other measurement campaigns. Don’t hesitate to contact us by filling in the form in our call for projects, which is open all the time!
